La historia arranca en Miami en 1959, año en que Fidel Castro llega al poder en Cuba. Ike Evans (Morgan) es el director de un lujoso hotel situado en la paradisíaca ciudad de Florida, cuya vida cambia por completo cuando se ve obligado a relacionarse con un jefe de la mafia, Ben 'El Carnicero' Diamond (Danny Huston, 'X-Men Orígenes: Lobezno'), para asegurar el futuro de su negocio.
